Abbey Weddings

Congratulations on your decision to be married, and welcome to our website as you consider whether the Abbey Church of Dunfermline is the place for your ceremony to happen.  With changes in Church of Scotland legislation (General Assembly, 2022), the Abbey Church of Dunfermline will be able to offer equal opportunity to ALL couples (no matter gender) who would wish to be married.

In choosing to be married in the Abbey Church you will be married within a unique historic setting according to the practice and tradition of the Church of Scotland.

On the day of a marriage ceremony, traditionally the great medieval West Door has been opened allowing guests and wedding participants to progress through the ancient Nave into the Church for the Wedding Ceremony. The service is then conducted in accordance with the custom and practice of the Church of Scotland, and with respect to the worship and tradition of the present congregation.   All music is played on the organ, although on occasion (and with agreement of the minister and the Master of Music) alternative musicians have participated.

Those wishing to be married within the Abbey Church should contact the minister and make an appointment to discuss dates and times. More information about what happens during a marriage ceremony and potential costs are discussed at this first meeting.
